WEBINAR: FRCPath for Transfusion Scientists

Tom Bullock is a Consultant Clinical Scientist Trainee, working in the Diagnostic and Therapeutic Services directorate within NHS Blood & Transplant in Bristol. Having graduated from the University of the West of England in 2003, Tom began work as a Biomedical Scientist at the International Blood Group Reference Laboratory (IBGRL).
As a Red Cell Immunohaematology (RCI) specialist, Tom was the reference serology laboratory manager at IBGRL, gaining experience in investigation of antibodies to both high and low frequency antigens, complex mixtures of antibodies and maintenance of the international rare donor panel. Working with his colleagues, he was involved with the discovery of many novel blood group antigens and has co-authored numerous papers in this area.
He is one of the first Clinical Scientists in the UK to be selected to undertake the Higher Specialist Scientific Training (HSST) programme and is currently nearing the end of a combined doctorate and FRCPath training in Clinical Science, specialising in clinical transfusion science. He has a keen interest in training and education, is a council member of the British Blood Transfusion Society, and is chair of the communications committee, in addition, he currently chairs the NHSBT RCI manual serology working group.


Dr. Irene Regan is Chief Medical Scientist (Coagulation/Haematology) at Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin (formerly OLCHC) Dublin, Ireland, which hosts the National Paediatric centre for haematology/oncology and haemostatic disorders a post she has held since 2005. She is a Clinical Research Fellow with University College Dublin and the National Children’s Research Centre Crumlin. She is also a visiting lecturer on the MSc programme in Clinical Laboratory Science at Technological University Dublin and has completed her term as extern examiner on the BSc in Biomedical Science.
She is a fellow of the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (FACSLM) and the Royal College of Pathologists UK (FRCPath) and was appointed as country advisor to the Royal College in 2015. She is a registered Clinical Scientist with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) UK.

She is actively involved in collaborative research. Her research interests include analytical haematology, coagulation and laboratory diagnostics and education in haematology. She has supervised many undergraduate and post-graduate students at BSc and MSc, MD, MCh and MBA level.
