International Infection Prevention Week (14 to 20 October) takes place to highlight how we can protect our health by reducing infection.
The theme this year is Vaccines are Everybody’s Business.
• See hse.ie/handhygiene for more information about good hand hygiene.
• Visit the IIPW site for lots of games, fun facts and information on vaccination.
Keeping patients safe from infection is everyone’s responsibility. Everyone needs to know the best ways to prevent infections.
Professor Martin Cormican, HSE National Lead for Antibiotic Resistance says,
“International Infection Prevention week gives us the opportunity to highlight some of the key actions we can all take to reduce infection.
This year the theme is vaccination and it’s important to ensure that we as healthcare professionals are aware of the role vaccination plays in protecting patient health and the health of our families.
It’s also very important that healthcare staff are up to date with their vaccines and get the annual flu vaccination to help protect patients and themselves from getting flu.
It is essential that we all clean our hands thoroughly to reduce the risk of infection spreading.
We often think we have washed our hands properly but have a look at this short experiment by Prof. Martin Cormican and you will be surprised.”
