Bio:
Anna Purcell is a Chief Medical Scientist in Cellular Pathology with over two decades of experience in laboratory processes, management and service provision. Graduating with a degree in Medical Laboratory Science from DIT, Kevin ST in Dublin, Anna began her career at Mater Misericordiae University Hospital (MMUH) in 1999 as a Basic Grade Medical Scientist. Gaining an MSc in 2005 and more recently achieving a Black Belt in LSS.
Over the years, she has progressed through various roles, including Senior Medical Scientist and Quality Lead, demonstrating her commitment to professional growth and development.

Abstract:
This Zoom session will explore the practical application of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) methodology in enhancing operational efficiency within a cellular pathology laboratory setting. Beginning with an introduction to LSS, attendees will gain an understanding of its principles, which emphasise the elimination of waste, reducing variation and continuous process improvement to optimise outcomes.

The lecture delves into two specific projects undertaken within the cellular pathology laboratory: improving cut-up dissection rates and streamlining specimen delivery processes. Through the implementation of LSS tools and techniques, these projects aimed to address inefficiencies and bottlenecks, ultimately enhancing laboratory performance and service delivery.

The first project focuses on improving cut-up dissection rates, a critical aspect of specimen processing in cellular pathology. By analysing current workflows, identifying root causes of delays, and implementing targeted interventions, the project aimed to streamline the dissection process, reduce turnaround times, and enhance overall productivity.

The second project centres on streamlining specimen delivery to the laboratory, recognising the importance of timely and accurate specimen receipt for efficient processing. Through the application of LSS principles, including value stream mapping and process optimisation, the project sought to identify opportunities for improvement such as optimising transportation routes.

Attendees will gain insights into the practical implementation of LSS methodology within a cellular pathology laboratory, learning from real-world projects aimed at improving efficiency, reducing errors, and ultimately enhancing the quality of diagnostic services provided.
