Calculated Risks – Increasing use of good organs for transplantation

In 2021, 65 families’ generously donated their loved ones organs and 35 families’ donated live kidneys through the living kidney program. This incredible generosity has saved the lives of 206 people, highlighting that organ donation saves lives. However there is always a shortage of organs therefore we have to ensure we are considering all offers with an understanding of risks and benefits. One such area is the increasing use of organs that are deemed to be at a higher risk for transmitting an undiagnosed blood borne virus.
Dr Lynch is a Consultant in Clinical Microbiology with a Special Interest in Heart and Lung Transplantation. The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital is the National Heart and Lung Transplant Centre for Ireland.
