Clinical Laboratory Testing and Capability regarding the CORONAVIRUS Pandemic

Testing for coronavirus is being conducted in clinical laboratories by qualified medical scientists. There are now pop up centres for sampling patients to facilitate early collection and transport of these samples for urgent testing once they arrive at the clinical laboratory. Medical scientists initially at the National Virus Reference Laboratory developed and validated testing and were prepared for coronavirus testing before it arrived here. Subsequently, regional laboratories developed testing for their own regions, which is in place in many clinical laboratories at this time.  In the case where additional qualified staff will be required by clinical laboratories there is now a panel of retired medical scientists willing to go back into their laboratories to work if required.  Normal services are also being maintained by the clinical laboratories at this time.

Letter to: All Medical Scientists.
